About
Damien is Professor of Health Studies, and a psychotherapist working mainly with men in the community. He has a background in public health, sociology and qualitative research. He previously worked in the Health Experiences Research Group (HERG) at the University of Oxford. There, he developed research that fleshed out for the first time what recovery from depression actually entailed for patients, thus moving the field beyond the current rhetoric advocating a general ‘recovery approach,’ by providing signposts as to what that practice might be about. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) subsequently adopted Ridge & Ziebland’s (2006) research on recovery extensively in their guidance on the treatment and management of depression in adults in the UK (2010). Ridge continues to work with HERG, recently in the area of patient experiences of psychosis as well as evaluating 'experience-led commissioning.'
Since late 2006 at the University of Westminster, Damien has led the Patient Experience Research Group. The Patient Experience Research Group was highlighted in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008) as an up-and-coming strength within the University. Damien co-chairs Health Perspectives with Professor Volker Scheid.
Damien is committed to putting patient expertise at the centre of all health consultations and considerations. As well as being a specialist in qualitative research and complex evaluations for over 18 years, Damien provides person-centred psychotherapy in the community.
Damien has recently published a book on how patients go about recovering from depression (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2009), as well as over 40 peer-reviewed academic journal papers and book chapters. He has published in men’s health, mental distress, depression and recovery, chronic pain and self-management, how people manage their HIV, sexualities, as well as spirituality and mental health.
