About

Formerly a solicitor in private practice, I began work as an academic at South Bank teaching Equity and Torts and as a clinical supervisor and Honourary Legal Adviser at North Lambeth Citizens' Advice Bureau. This led onto work on 'legal skills', particularly with the Legal Skills Research Group convened by Professor Terence Daintith at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London between 1989 and 1997. I joined Westminster in 1989 as principal lecturer in Law, teaching Tort, Contract and Legal Skills. I was University Project Co-ordinator of the Enterprise in Higher Education initiative before becoming Head of School (now Dean) in 1995. I have been a member of the Education and Training Committee of the Bar of England and Wales for a number of years and was chair of the Bar Vocational Course Board between 2005 and 2008. I also served on the Law Society's Training Framework Review Group.

My research covers legal professional practice, education and ethics, which I approach from both an empirical and theoretical perspective. I am a member of the ISA/RCSL Working Group on Legal Professions and convene the Legal Profession stream at the SLSA Annual Conference. With Jenny Levin, I write 'The Ethics and Conduct of Lawyers in England and Wales'  (Oxford: Hart Publishing, 2008), currently in a second edition.
